Sofia pressed the shell to her ear. Bright golden light burst right out! "Look at that!" Sofia shouted happily. Luminous jellyfish glowed like soft nightlights. They floated above the salty water. A smiling mermaid splashed the waves. She reached out a gentle hand. "Thank you for calling," she giggled.
Sofia pressed the spiral conch against her ear, gasping as warmth surged through the rough ridges. Brilliant ribbons of starlight poured from the opening, spiraling toward the rocky cove. Sofia felt both dizzy with fear and completely enchanted. Bobbing among the frothing waves, a mermaid with emerald hair reached through the glow. Translucent jellyfish drifted between them like floating lanterns. "I heard your song," the sea maiden whispered over the crashing surf.
Sofia lifted the ridged conch to her ear, releasing an ancient melody that dissolved the boundary between land and tide. Swirling tendrils of amber radiance spilled across the twilight, illuminating a constellation of translucent jellyfish suspended in the mist. From the cresting foam, the emerald-tailed siren emerged, her outstretched fingers brushing the edges of the light. She looked upon Sofia with centuries of wistful longing, recognizing an old kinship in the mortal girl's quiet gaze. The sea held endless secrets, but in this breathless sunset, one had chosen to answer.
