A first birthday is mostly for the grown-ups, and that's fine. This book tells the story of the first year: the people who showed up, the first steps, the cake they'll mostly wear. Your one-year-old will love the faces. In a few years, they'll love the story.

Noah stands up tall. Wobble, wobble! Mommy holds out her hands. One step. Two steps! Mommy claps. Clap, clap, clap! Noah is walking!
Noah held on to the couch. Mommy knelt down on the rug. "Come here, Noah!" she said. Noah let go of the couch. He took one wobbly step. Then he took another! Mommy laughed and cheered. Noah walked right into Mommy's arms!
Noah gripped the edge of the couch with both hands and studied the rug like it was a wide, wild ocean. On the far side, Mom knelt with her arms open, the birthday bunting fluttering above her. "You can do it," she whispered. Noah let go. One wobbly step, then another, then a third that was almost a run. He tumbled into her arms, and Mom's laugh filled the whole room.
For eleven months the living room had been a place Noah crossed on his hands and knees. That afternoon, under the paper bunting strung up for his birthday, he let go of the couch and stood alone, swaying like a sapling in the wind, while his mother knelt at the far edge of the rug with her arms open. Three uncertain steps, then a fourth that was nearly a fall, and Noah arrived, laughing, at the beginning of everything that would come after.

One-year-olds love books with faces they know. A book where Mom, Grandpa, and the baby are the pictures is one they'll point at, page after page.
The reading level decides which book it becomes. First Adventure is for lap time now. Keepsake Narrative writes the same year for an older reader, the book they'll pull off the shelf at eleven to find out what turning one was like.
